Description

Social Etiquette (Ādāb al-Muʿāsharāt), by the erudite sub-continent scholar, Mawlānā Ashraf ʿAlī Thānawī (may Allah be pleased with him) is a brief treatise on nurturing and perfecting our social conduct. The esteemed author presents anecdotes and practical examples from personal experience, critiquing scenarios and interactions that are often overlooked and seemingly harmless but contradict the spirit of Islam. Whilst this publication is an easy read, it calls for practical expression; to uplift the Islamic requirements in the domain of social life and interactions, to develop healthy communities and foster peace, harmony, love, and cohesion. In order to make this translation accessible to the many millions of Muslims living in Western countries, examples (not in the original work) have been added in the footnotes discussing contemporary contexts relevant to our current times and places.

About the Author

Mawlānā Ashraf Alī Thānawī (1362AH/1943CE) is one of the Islamic world’s most outstanding religious figures of recent times. Having been taught good etiquette and discipline by his father at a young age, he went on to study all of the sciences of Islam extensively. Once his formal studies were completed, he began teaching and became famed for his teachings in taṣawwuf, whilst reviving its primary aim; curing the heart of all spiritual ailments and adorning it with the most beautiful conduct. He eventually retired from teaching, establishing his khānqah (spiritual lodge) in Thānā Bhāwan, Uttar Pradesh, India, where his only desire was to reform the masses by diagnosing their spiritual maladies. Due to his admirable endeavour and lasting legacy, he is, to this day, called Ḥakīm al-Ummah; the Physician of the community of the Prophet g.
